Reference: Product Families in ProDigi
Product families, (also known as configurables or variables), or a way of managing a group of products together in a consistent way.
Product families should be set up this way from the start. This is done to ensure consistency of data structures from the beginning. It is not currently possible to combine existing individual products into a family.
Setting up a new product family typically this involves one or two variable attributes, such as size or colour. In combination this can create a family containing every permutation. In the image below, the jacket has 132 members of the family.
Sometimes some products are not available in certain combinations, for example an extra large orange jacket. In this case, all products should be set up and the invalid permutations should simply be flagged as not available.
When the product is set up via ProDigi, the system will look after the groupings and the drop-downs on the website for you. It will also look after product codes to ensure there is complete consistency in the way the information is handled and no conflicts with any existing codes.
NB: In the dashboard, a product family is counted as a single product. For example the product might be T-shirt; although it’s available in several different colours and sizes, it’s one product. There are many benefits to this, one of which is the ability to report the sales of all products in the family group as one for the first time. It also makes it much faster to manage information about the whole family in one go.
